Fra Noi Embrace Your Inner Italian
The pulse of Chicago’s vibrant Italian-American community was palpable at the Mazzini Verdi Club in Franklin Park on July 18, when the Harlem Avenue Little Italy Business Association hosted its first annual business awards banquet.
The evening’s primary honors went to two steadfast advocates for the neighborhood, Elmwood Park Mayor Angelo “Skip” Saviano and Chicago Alderman Nick Sposato. Both men were recognized for their tireless public service and their commitment to preserving the cultural and economic vitality of the Harlem Avenue enclave.
Perhaps the most emotional moment of the night came during a surprise presentation. The room erupted in applause as Gino and Tony Bartucci were called to the stage to receive a well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award. The Bartuccis have long been synonymous with the generous spirit of the community, and the genuine surprise on their faces reflected the humble nature of a pair who have given so much without ever expecting the spotlight in return.
The association also shined a light on two cherished local legends for their longtime service to the community. Nina Miulli Filipponio of Bar San Francesco was honored for creating a warm, welcoming environment where locals can always find a perfect cup of coffee and a friendly face, and Vito Matozzo of Vito’s Barbershop on Diversey Avenue was recognized for decades of keeping the neighborhood looking sharp while serving as an unofficial community sounding board.
