Feast of Maria SS. Lauretana celebrates landmark anniversary

This past Labor Day weekend, the 125th Annual Feast of Maria SS. Lauretana returned to Niles for a milestone celebration. Over three days, record-breaking crowds filled the festival grounds. Visitors from throughout the country, travelers from Italy and countless Chicagoland families came together to honor a devotion that has endured for more than a century.

What began at St. Philip Benizi Parish in Chicago’s Little Sicily has grown into one of the Midwest’s most cherished Italian festivals. When Sicilian immigrants from Altavilla Milicia first celebrated their devotion to Maria SS. Lauretana, they sought not only to honor their Blessed Mother but also to preserve the culture and values that defined them. Today, their vision continues. As one society member reflected, “This feast is more than an annual celebration. It is a living tradition that connects us to our roots, our families and our faith.”

The highlight of the weekend was the famed “Flight of the Angels,” a breathtaking tribute symbolizing both devotion and continuity. Yet the feast was equally defined by unity: Italian societies from across Chicagoland and beyond came together, ensuring that these traditions not only survive but also thrive.

Special thanks went to the dedicated feast committee, tireless volunteers, and the presidents and officers of each society chapter. Recognition was given to President Joseph Camarda, whose six decades of leadership have guided the Maria SS. Lauretana Society. Gratitude was also extended to the village of Niles, Mayor George Alpogianis and the Niles Park District for their steadfast support.
