The Italian Sons and Daughters of America celebrated its 47th Biennial National Convention from Aug. 9-12 at the Omni Chicago Hotel. Led by President Basil M. Russo, ISDA members from districts across Indiana/Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio/Michigan, New Jersey, West Virginia and Louisiana gathered to celebrate Italian American heritage and strengthen fraternal ties.
The convention kicked off with a heartfelt Mass by Fr. Robert C. Rizzo of Holy Archangels Parish in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, who shared humorous stories from his Italian childhood. U.S. Rep. Mike Rulli, co-chair of the Italian American Congressional Delegation, delivered a powerful keynote, reflecting on his roots and pledging support for dual citizenship and Columbus Day advocacy.
A highlight of the convention was the screening of “My Kind of People” by Joe Picozzi, a 2024 Russo Brothers Italian American Filmmaker Forum grant recipient. The short film portrayed a young man who was proud of his Italian descent until he discovered through a DNA test that his father was adopted, shattering his identity and family ties and catapulting him into a journey of rediscovery.
The election of Danielle Salasavage (Western New York) and Sharon Cerrone (Western Pennsylvania) as national vice presidents marked a milestone for Italian American women leading ISDA’s initiatives. Ron Onesti, president of the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, honored Russo with an award for his defense of Columbus Day and associated statues on a national level. The convention concluded with a lively dance floor, energized by a performance by the Jersey Girls, capping a memorable celebration of culture and community.
