The American Italian Cultural Society has been faithfully serving the Italian American community of the southwest suburbs from its clubhouse in Crest Hill for nearly 40 years. In February, the AICS embarked on an ambitious renovation project that has culminated in a completely refurbished bar and dining area.
“Our goal was to update our club, keeping in mind the culture and traditions in place,” AICS President John Mauzer says. “Our club prayer is, ‘So we may leave the legacy to our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.’”
The renovation was completed with the input and involvement of the younger generation, Mauzer proudly points out, and all the work — from cabinets and liquor shelves to the bar itself — was done by members.
“Repurposed wine barrels were installed on the bar front in keeping with Italian wine-making traditions, and photos from regions in Italy our members came from are hanging throughout the club,” he notes. “Since the renovation, hall rentals and catering interest have increased significantly.”
A grand reopening on April 25 featured a live band and food for purchase. The club is open to the public on Monday, Friday and Saturday nights from 5 to 10 p.m., with Mondays featuring a Queen of Hearts raffle. Spaghetti dinners on the second Thursday of the month are also open to the public, with online ordering available. The AICS’s Festa Italiana in August is one of the area’s most popular summer events.
