Taking a long look at what you need

With a lockdown that seems to go on forever, it’s safe to say we’ve all spent a lot more time at home than we ever have before. As a result, we’ve all become intimately familiar with the things about our home that we love and the things we’d love to change.

If you were planning on buying a new home before COVID-19, spending a lot of time in your current home will help you decide what you want by giving you the opportunity to look closely at what you have and don’t have right now with an eye toward what your dream home might eventually be.

Why does this home no longer work for you? What are you going to miss when you move out? Is there too much or too little space? Are there enough bedrooms? How many bathrooms do you need? Do you have the number of levels you want? How do you feel about the style and the layout? Do you feel comfortable in your home?

Locked down or not, we spend a lot of time in our homes. It’s important that you feel comfortable and content when you’re there.

The outside of your home can be just as important as the inside. Some people need more outdoor space than others. Maybe you have pets or kids. It’s always better to have room for them to run around and enjoy some fresh air. Having outside space is also a huge bonus if you like to entertain. Even if you don’t have a lot of space inside, having a good-sized backyard can make all the difference when friends stop by.

Some people don’t want a lot of outdoor space because of the upkeep. If you’re not an outdoor kind of person, there’s no reason to saddle yourself with all that space. You also need to take parking and storage into account. Take a tape measure to those needs and make sure that amount of space is available in your new place.

Now look beyond your property line. Where you live can have a huge impact on your happiness and way of life. Do you like your neighbors and the neighborhood you live in. If not, then why? You might prefer a short commute to work and to be within walking distance of restaurants, bars, stores or public transportation.

You need to look at your new home from every angle. Remember, you’re the person who will be living there, you have to make sure it fits your wants and needs.
