Underscoring the need to help lower taxes for homeowners and keep tax dollars local, state Rep. Anthony DeLuca is leading a legislative effort to increase the amount of money local governments receive from the Local Government Distributive Fund. DeLuca’s House Bill 4169 would increase the state income tax transfer amount into the LGDF. Currently, 6.06 percent of individual income tax revenues and 6.85 percent of corporate income tax revenues are distributed to local governments. On March 14, 1891, 11 Sicilian immigrants who had been falsely accused of murdering the police chief of New Orleans were shot and hung by a mob of thousands in the largest mass lynching in American history. The 130th anniversary of that dark day was marked in Chicago with a moving commemoration in Arrigo Park hosted by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans. Responding to continued economic losses in the south suburbs, State Rep. Anthony DeLuca has filed legislation that would reduce taxes on land bank properties in an attempt to stimulate redevelopment. “The problem facing the Southland region is that, when our manufacturing and industrial jobs left, nothing replaced them,” DeLuca says. House Bill 1842 would create a special designation in several south suburban townships for commercial- or industrial-zoned properties that have been vacant for a year or more. If developers apply for and receive the designation, the value would be capped at 50 percent of the last assessment, reducing tax rates …

State Rep. Anthony DeLuca recently brought together local religious leaders for a non-denominational, interfaith breakfast at Governor State University. Attendees discussed ways the state can work with local faith communities to improve the quality of life in the southern suburbs. “Faith leaders and places of worship do more than just nourish a person’s soul. They are places that in good and bad times become the focal points of a community,” DeLuca said. “They are at the center of these community occurrences, bring people together and provide additional services to the less fortunate.”

  State Rep. Anthony DeLuca hosted a free veterans’ appreciation picnic at Veterans Memorial Park in Glenwood in June. More than 80 veterans and their family members shared food, conversation and bingo with DeLuca and other elected officials. The Chicago Heights Veterans Center was present to answer questions and assist veterans. “Veterans made sacrifices for our safety and freedom that we must not take for granted,” DeLuca says. “They deserve our thanks every day, not just on special holidays, and this picnic is a sign of our community’s gratitude.”  

State Rep. Anthony DeLuca is working with local officials to reduce the number of accidents and injuries that occur at the railroad crossing on 17th Street between Halsted Street and East End Avenue. “A public safety issue like this is a priority issue for me,” DeLuca said. “From 2012-16 this one location has had over 30 accidents with six injuries.” DeLuca has requested $250,000 in emergency funding from Illinois Transportation Secretary Randall Blackthorn to immediately institute safety improvements at and around the crossing. Legislation spearheaded by State Rep. Anthony DeLuca will hold state agencies and their finances more accountable. The law went into effect on Jan. 1. DeLuca’s Debt Transparency Act requires state agencies to disclose the bills they are holding monthly so that taxpayers will know the true extent of the state’s debt, as well as an estimate of the penalties paid on late bills. “Since 2014, the backlog of unpaid bills has increased to over $15 billion,” DeLuca notes. “When agencies fail to report their past due bills, it results in unnecessary late fees and penalties that hard-working families are responsible …

It’s amazing what someone can accomplish with a little passion and diplomacy. State Rep. Anthony DeLuca’s recent defense of Columbus Day is a shining example. As we all know, annual celebrations of Columbus have been under assault for decades, with cities and states across the country either flat-out eliminating them or supplanting them with celebrations honoring Native Americans.
