With its genesis during a family trip to Italy, the dinnerware and home décor company Vietri has grown into the largest Italian importing company within the American tabletop industry.

The company was co-founded by sisters Susan and Frances Gravely, who took their first trip to Italy in 1983, staying on the Amalfi Coast. “They went to lunch and found themselves captivated by the hotel’s colorful, handcrafted dinnerware,” the company’s website says. “The next day they arranged to meet the artisans at a nearby factory in the town of Vietri sul Mare. As they watched the artisans paint, glaze and fire each piece by hand, they were inspired to share the treasure they had discovered.”

Starting as a small venture representing a single Italian factory, Vietri now collaborates with more than 30 talented artisans located throughout Italy who specialize in ceramics, glass, stainless steel, terra cotta and stoneware. The company serves more than 2,500 specialty stores across all 50 states, as well as in Canada, England, Mexico, Europe, South America, Asia and Australia.

“At Vietri, our philosophy is rooted in inspiring the celebration of life through the beauty of handcrafted Italian designs for the table, home and garden,” a company spokesperson said. “We deeply value the moments we share with family and friends and aim to enhance these occasions with our products.”

The creation of new lines and products is driven by a product development team that regularly travels throughout Italy seeking inspiration, a company representative explained. “The vibrant Italian culture, breathtaking landscapes and exquisite cuisine continually provide fresh ideas and inspiration for our collections.”

Vietri recently launched its inaugural hospitality line. Meanwhile, Susan Gravely is working on her second book, “Italy in a Glass,” to follow her memoir cookbook, “Italy on a Plate.”
