Making the big move

Moving has always been an interesting adventure for people, especially when you unearth something you thought you had lost. It’s a fresh start for some, and many consider it a new chapter in their lives, but for others, it can be a stressful time.

Procrastination is going to be your worst enemy. Don’t put off packing until the last minute. Your local grocery store many times will give you free boxes if you give them a couple of days notice. Start out with items you know you won’t need right away, like maybe your winter wear if you’re moving in the summer. Here’s good tip for the clothing hanging your closets. Grab a garbage bag, cut a little hole in the bottom of it in the center of the bag, and abracadabra, you have your very own dry cleaning bag! Just slip the hangers right through the hole. You’ll thank if it’s raining the day you move.

Moving offers a great opportunity to “thin the herd.” Do you really need all of those cleaning products under your sink. And what about all those boxes in your basement that you haven’t opened in years. This is a great time to start a donation pile! Be sure pack your tool box last. Who knows what you’ll need unscrew or nail down before you walk out the door.

Now comes the time to find a moving company if you do not have the man power to do it on your own. Be sure to do your do diligence while researching moving companies. Always ask to see proof of insurance not only for the vehicles they will be using to transport your belongings but also liability coverage in case one of the movers causes damage to your property or belongings. Be sure the moving company has a truck large enough to make one trip with all of your belongings since most companies will charge by the hour.

Have the moving company sends you a written estimate prior to agreeing since many will try to slip in hidden fees. I have seen moving companies inform people after the fact that anything more than seven stairs is an extra charge per stair!

A few days before the move, start taking some of the lighter boxes yourself and let the movers focus on the larger and heavier items.

When it comes to your new property, redecorate or make any minor repairs prior to moving any belongings in. It’s a lot easier and cheaper to repaint a home with no furniture inside of it.

Once moved in and before you start to unpack, open up a battle of wine or San Pellegrino and celebrate! You’re home!
