Fra Noi Embrace Your Inner Italian
Pelago Cafe, an Italian spot that recently opened at 325 Waukegan Ave. in north suburban Highwood, celebrates a family’s heritage and culinary traditions based in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region.
The cafe is owned by cousins Mada Ugolini-Hitchmough and Ruthie Amidei, and its name honors two neighboring towns, Sant’Anna Pelago and Pievepelago, “where generations of family, food and tradition shaped the values carried forward today,” the business’ website states.
“When our families emigrated from Italy, they planted their roots in Highwood. We both live here today and love this community deeply,” Hitchmough and Amidei told Patch. “Highwood has such a rich appreciation for culture and cuisine. It’s built on the shoulders of our ancestors and we wanted to contribute to that tapestry by bringing the flavors of our region, Emilia-Romagna, to the town that shaped us.”
Pelago Cafe serves croissants (including Nutella, marmellata, and ham and cheese), antipasti boards, panini (including caprese, mortadella, and Italian sausage), “flattini” (or flatbreads, including margherita and prosciutto) and desserts such as tiramisu and cannoli. Beverages include coffee, espresso, Italian soda and a selection of wine.
Amidei also plans to bring in her beloved biscotti brand, Ruthie’s Biscotti, and Hitchmough plans to add to the menu her handmade tortellacci, which are already served at several local establishments, the Patch reported.
