Women’s club spreads sunshine across NW Indiana

The sun shines a little brighter in both Northwest Indiana and the southeast corner of the Chicago area thanks to the Italian American Women’s Club of Lake County. Founded in 1965, the venerable nonprofit promotes friendship among its members, celebrates Italian culture, and supports charities here and abroad.

The club was launched in East Chicago, Indiana, by the wives of the members of the Cesare Battisti Lodge No. 27. When the lodge opened Villa Cesare at 900 Eagle Ridge Drive in Schererville, Indiana, the IAWC moved its base of operations there.

Members gather on the second Thursday of each month, excluding January, July and August. Their goals at the meetings are to enjoy the pleasures of each other’s company and learn about their shared Italian heritage.

The evenings include games and crafts, an Italian heritage lesson and delicious Italian food. A different region of Italy is explored each month, with the meal featuring specialties from the region prepared and served by IAWC members. A recent presentation about the region of Lazio was complemented by a primo piatto of pasta all’amatriciana.

The IAWC supports food banks, animal shelters and other local charities, and makes donations to Italy in response to earthquakes and other crises. The club also bestows scholarships on the college-bound children of its members.

You can stay abreast of club activities on the Italian American Women’s Club of Lake County’s Facebook page.
