Exciting news! Italy is reaching out like never before to reconnect with people of Italian heritage living throughout the world. Dubbed “Italea,” the program promotes “roots tourism” to the descendants of the great Italian diaspora. Com.It.Es (Comitato per gli italiani all’estero) and Associazione Campania in America teamed up on June 4 for a celebration that ranged across the Windy City. The day began with the annual Festa della Repubblica celebration at Our Lady of Pompeii on Taylor Street, then relocated to Piazza Italia on Harlem Avenue, where they held a victory rally for the Naples soccer team that had won the Serie A title the day before. Comitato per gli italiani all’estero took part in a pair of vigils for Diego Damis, an Italian citizen who was murdered while walking home from his job at the Cove Lounge in Hyde Park on Feb. 25. Longtime community activist Carlo Vaniglia has been elected president of Comitato per gli Italiani all’Estero (The Committee for Italians Living Abroad). Joining Vaniglia on Com.It.Es are Vice President Pietro Lorenzini; Secretary Cristina Gorizio; Treasurer Ivana Di Piero; executives Michelangelo Gianpaoli and Francesco DiMaggio; and members Stefano Butera, Giovanni Geusa, Roberto Vinci, Carol D’Anca, Franco Franchi and Lucio Bosco. The above were elected by Italian citizens living in the jurisdiction of Italy’s Chicago consulate, which encompasses 11 states.
