This month we highlight the distinguished and successful career of attorney Angelo J. Bufalino, the chair of the intellectual property group of the prestigious Chicago law firm of Vedder Price. This short bio of Angelo on his firm’s website provides a brief description:

“Angelo J. Bufalino has been practicing intellectual property law for over 29 years. He counsels clients in patent, trademark and copyright matters, including patent and trademark prosecution and related licensing matters, and patent validity and infringement studies, and has extensive, worldwide experience in prosecuting patents and trademarks. He has appeared in federal district and appellate court litigation relating to products in various industries and technologies, in inter partes proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and in proceedings before the U.S. Patent Office Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. He has been involved in approximately 25 patent litigation matters as well as an equal number of copyright and trademark infringement actions. Mr. Bufalino serves a diverse range of clients with an emphasis on electrical and mechanical technology and consumer products. Mr. Bufalino received his J.D. from Loyola University in 1979 and his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1976.”

Of course, there are volumes more that can be said about this outstanding member of our community. His leadership and involvement is demonstrated by the fact that he just completed a six-year term as a trustee of Loyola Academy, a Jesuit high school in Wilmette. He currently serves as a member of the Legal Committee of the City of Lake Forest, where he has lived with his family since 1985.

As chair of the Vedder Price IP Group, Angelo handles patent prosecutions and procurement, including all phases of the patent process in the U.S. and throughout the world. He does the same for clients of the firm in connection with trademark and copyright matters. He is best known as a litigator in this highly specialized field. He has handled, at last count, almost 100 major pieces of litigation, prosecuting and defending patent, trademark and copyright and copyright cases around the country.

It is interesting to note that we highlighted, in the July 2009 issue of Fra Noi, the distinguished career of his cardiologist brother, Dr. Vincent J. Bufalino, with the Midwest Heart Specialists in the western suburbs. Dr. Vince’s list of awards and honors include: “Top Cardio Doctor” (Chicago Magazine, numerous years), “Best Doctor” (according to national medical associations, organizations, and publications), and “Hall of Famer” in the eyes of medical, community and education entities.

Vince and Angelo have a sister, Marietta, a respected dentist with offices in Rolling Meadows.

Angelo says this about his ancestry and background:

“My roots go back to my father, Dominick, who immigrated from Vizzini, Sicily, in 1950 with his brother John Bufalino. They came to the United States to help their uncle, Anthony Paterno, in a wine importing/distribution business that he was opening in Chicago. My father met my mother, Camelia LoPresti, shortly after he arrived, and they got married. My mother’s parents, Angelo and Lily LoPresti, likewise immigrated from Vizzini, Sicily, after the First World War. My mother was born in the United States.

“My father spent his entire working career here in Chicago in the wine and spirits business, first with Pacific Wine/Paterno Imports, and later with Continental Distributors. My mother worked as a teacher at Mother Guerin High School in the near western suburbs.

“I married Pat Morahan in 1979. I have four children — Katie, Michael, Tom, and Kevin — all of whom are now employed in various companies based in the Chicago area. My daughter married Chris McCarney and they have a son, Joseph (Joey) Angelo McCarney. My son Michael married Hilary Lupo.”
