The Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans honored five elected officials at its second annual Government Relations Luncheon on Nov. 19 at the Des Plaines Theatre. The event was spearheaded by JCCIA President Ron Onesti, with Enza Ranieri, a recipient of last year’s awards, chairing the committee.
More than 150 organization presidents, elected officials and community leaders came together for the event. “In an environment where elected officials walk on eggshells when it comes to controversial issues such as Columbus Day, it’s crucial that we recognize those who bravely stand up for our community, our traditions and our culture,” Onesti said.
Similar in concept to the JCCIA’s Dante Awards Luncheon, which recognizes supportive members of the media, the luncheon honors elected officials who have championed the Italian-American community and its causes.
This year’s Government Relations Awards went to Illinois State Treasurer Michael W. Frerichs, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison, and Chicago Aldermen Nicholas Sposato and Raymond Lopez.
Frerichs opened his remarks in Italian, noting that Italy is one of his favorite vacation spots. Pappas expressed her pride in the strides the Italian-American community has made, likening it to the successes of groups in the Greek-American community.
Morrison, whose family has owned Dino’s Pizza in Chicago for more than 50 years, also spoke briefly in Italian during his acceptance speech, dedicating the award to his grandparents, who he said came to America from Italy, raising their family with flour, water and heart.
Sposato and Lopez offered their heartfelt thanks for the honor.
