Bair raises the cancer research bar

The Day 1 Survivors’ second annual Grand Garden Party & Bocce Tourney for Cancer Care on June 10 transformed the Wilmette Harbor Club into a “Summer Soiree,” with guests dressed in Kentucky Derby-style hats and attire while raising funds for cancer research. The event was organized and hosted by an all-volunteer crew. The organization was founded by Dina Bair Maher, a medical reporter and anchor at WGN-TV, and her husband, John Maher. OSDIA state lodge installs two presidents

The Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America Grand Lodge of IL/WI has installed new presidents for a pair of Illinois lodges. The OSDIA state grand lodge encompasses seven local lodges in Illinois and Wisconsin. Mario D’Antonio will preside over Leone D’Oro Lodge #2700, which meets in Tinley Park. Cultural institute to host coursework for Italian instructors

  The Italian Cultural Institute will host the DITALS Base and I Livello courses from September 21-24 at its offices on Michigan Avenue. The coursework is required for admission to the professional certificate exam for teaching Italian to adults as well as  teaching Italian to undergrad and graduate students. DITALS certificates are issued by the Università per Stranieri di Siena, which certifies technical and practical skills for teaching Italian language to foreign students. Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Markets reaches major milestone

Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Markets turned 65 this year, celebrating the milestone by opening a new store in Mt. Prospect. Founded by Bari native Angelo Caputo, the local grocery empire got its start in 1958 as a small produce market on Harlem Avenue in Elmwood Park. The chain is now nine stores strong, with additional locations in Addison, Bloomingdale, Hanover Park, Naperville, Norridge, Orland Park and South Elgin, as well as an expansive grocery store, warehouse and corporate headquarters in Carol Stream. National fest to screen Italian film in Northbrook

Italian Film Festival USA will screen “Aspromonte, Land of the Forgotten” at 7 p.m. on Aug. 23 at the Northbrook Public Library. Directed by Mimmo Calopresti and released in 2019, the film will be presented in Italian with English subtitles. In 1951 in Africo, a small village in the southern valley of Aspromonte, a woman dies in childbirth because a doctor fails to arrive on time. No road connects Africo with other villages. Muti named CSO director music director emeritus

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has named Ricardo Muti Music Director Emeritus for Life beginning in the 2023/24 season. The CSO’s 10th music director, Muti recently completed his 13th season at the helm of the celebrated symphony. He will assume the new role in September, when he conducts two weeks of concerts in Chicago to open the CSO’s 133rd season. Muti was recognized with the new artistic title during an onstage ceremony on June 23 at Orchestra Hall during the first of three performances of Beethoven’s “Missa solemnis,” which marked his final subscription concert as Zell Music Director.
