The Grand Lodge of Illinois/Wisconsin of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America celebrated its 100th anniversary on Oct. 13 at the Silver Oaks Country Club. The event brought together members and friends to reflect on the century-long journey of an organization dedicated to preserving Italian heritage, promoting community service and supporting charitable causes.
Since its founding in 1924, the Grand Lodge of Illinois/Wisconsin has had 20 distinguished leaders, each leaving a lasting impact on the organization and its mission. The centennial celebration honored those who have served in this prestigious role, and it also spotlighted the remarkable contributions of two exceptional women who broke barriers in an organization traditionally led by men. Cavaliere Giovanna Verdecchia and Maria Marsalli, both of whom have served as grand lodge presidents, were honored for their dedication, leadership and commitment.
In a touching tribute to the memory and legacy of two past presidents, Richard Della Croce and Paul Loparco, the grand lodge presented scholarships in their honor. The recipients — Giovanna LoCascio, Matthew Geraci, Emily Ann Pickrum and Timothy Shepherd — each received a scholarship in recognition of their academic achievements and commitment to the values the OSDIA holds dear. They read aloud the essays they wrote on what their Italian-American heritage meant to them, inspiring the audience.
The evening’s festivities included a delicious luncheon, speeches from past and current leaders, a musical program, and a display highlighting the history of the grand lodge.
