Following four years at the University of Illinois, Dr. Marinello was accepted into a postgraduate residency program in periodontology at the prestigious Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry. Early on in his graduate training he realized his passion was clinical practice as well as teaching.
Following Dr. Marinello’s completion of his postgraduate residency, he entered the U.S. Navy for two years and was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base, being the only periodontist amongst 90 general dentists. This afforded him the opportunity to start a mini residency program in periodontics for those general dentists who desired further education in this specialized discipline.
Upon leaving the Navy, Dr. Marinello entered private practice in Chicago, as well as accepted a teaching position as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Illinois Dental School and an attending position at Michael Reese Hospital Dental Residency Program.
In 1978, as a board certified periodontist, he was enrolled as a diplomate in the specialty of periodontology, the highest recognition attainable in the specialty of periodontology.
His early commitment in the field of implant dentistry resulted in his being selected for a committee to review and establish guidelines as well as educational requirements for the profession.
In reviewing the curriculum vitae of Dr. Marinello, one can’t help but be overwhelmed by the number of awards, significant and prestigious, he has received over the years, including the General Electric Award in Periodontics from the University of Illinois (1971); the Award of Merit for Comprehensive Patient Care, University of Illinois (1971); recognition by the American Academy of Periodontology for 25 years as a diplomate exemplifying the mission and goals of the board; the Platinum Recognition Award for dedication and contributions to the field of Implant Dentistry; recognition in the “Guide to America’s Top Dentists” in the field of cosmetic and reconstructive periodontics and implant dentistry; selected as the Director of the Year (1999) out of 140 national and international study clubs, who are members of the Seattle Study Club network.
Dr. Marinello has had numerous hospital affiliations, including the Beth Israel Hospital-Reisman Dental Clinic in Brookline, Massachusetts (1971-1973); Michael Reese Hospital Attending (1975-1992); Lutheran General Hospital Attending (1985-2004); Special Guest Lecturer, 1976, Hines VA Hospital, to mention just a few.
His appointments are far too numerous to mention, but a few are significant: Diplomate of the American Academy of Periodontology (1978); American Academy of Periodontology Implant Committee (1988-1990); Education Committee for the Academy of Osseointegration (1996); fellowship in the Illinois State Dental Society, etc.
Dr. Marinello is the director of a dental organization fostering continuing education for general dentists. He lectures and provides live clinical demonstrations both nationally and internationally on topics relating to periodontics and cosmetic dentistry, as well as dental implants. He has been given numerous awards.
Dr. Marinello maintains a full-time practice limited to cosmetic and reconstructive periodontics and cosmetic and dental implants both in the downtown area and the northern suburbs.
His father’s family emigrated from the Lake Como area in northern Italy to Sandusky, Ohio, where his father was born. The family then moved to Roseland a number of years later. Of course as we know, Roseland for generations was one of a half dozen or so Italian enclaves in the Chicago area.
His mother was born in Marostica just north of Venice and immigrated with her family at the age of 11 in 1928 and shortly thereafter settled in the Roseland community. Both of his parents came from families having five children. The doctor’s parents were introduced to one another by his mother’s sister and approximately three years later were married.
