Our president, Antonio Romanucci, has chosen a new venue for the Queen Pageant: The National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. How exciting to be in the heart of Little Italy for our legendary contest to select the young lady who will reign over the Columbus Day Parade. It is as though it’s given a new jolt to our traditional judging. Chairman Jim Glimco and Choreographer Marilyn Fredericks are busy making all the arrangements.
Family and friends of our beautiful bevy will fill the ballroom of this most interesting building. What a great setting to be amid all of the memorabilia of the most accomplished names in sports. This wealth of history and memories surround every room. It is an appropriate location as we forge the way for another overwhelming display of our heritage.
All young ladies between 18 to 23 of half Italian descent are encouraged to be a part of this display of pride and self esteem. What’s most fresh about our new venue is that we will also have a new format for our usual fare.
We will still have a certified accounting firm. They will tally the judges choices for each category of beauty, poise and personality on a score of 1-10. Five (5) is average. Ten (10) is excellent. They will then identify the first cut, then the five semi-finalists, then down to the three finalists. At that point, from the three, the audience will decide who the queen will be. The actual details on the judging by the audience will be explained to all present at the pageant by our president. All semi-finalists and finalists will be in the queen’s court.
What a new approach! The event starts at 3 p.m. with cocktails. At 3:30 p.m. there will be introductions, followed by dinner promptly at 4 p.m. The pageant program is interspersed during meal courses. George Randazzo, our host, welcomes the JCCIA for what will be a most exciting experience for our enthusiastic young ladies.
The date is Sunday, July 24, for the selection of the 59th Queen to reign over the spectacular show of our celebration of Christopher Columbus, the foremost navigator and son of the country of our heritage.
