Paul Spadoni

Paul Spadoni is a speaker and author on the topics of Italian living and genealogy. He writes a popular blog, “Living (with) Abroad in Tuscany,” and is the author of an Amazon best-selling memoir, “An American Family in Italy: Living la Dolce Vita without Permission.” Paul has obtained his jure sanguinis Italian citizenship and in 2015 purchased a house in Tuscany in the hometown of his grandparents. A retired journalist and journalism teacher and now a freelance writer, he lives in Italy for four months a year and the United States for the other eight months.

Beware of false linguistic friends

Similar in spelling but different in meaning, false cognates can be sources of embarrassment and laughter when unleashed. As I work on making travel reservations for a coming trip to Italy, I’m reminded of a verbal blunder I once made while corresponding with the proprietor of a bed and breakfast.
