After last year’s success, the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago has brought back “Inferno 1911” a cinematic concert featuring the groundbreaking silent film “L’Inferno.” The movie will be accompanied live by pianist Stefano Maccagno and bassist Furio Di Castri, who will perform a musical score composed by Maccagno.

“L’Inferno” is a 1911 Italian silent film loosely adapted from the first canticle of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. Taking more tha three years to make, it was the first full-length Italian feature film ever produced. The film’s depictions of Hell closely followed those in the engravings of Gustave Doré for an edition of the “Divine Comedy” that was familiar to an international audience. The movie employed several special effects that were groundbreaking at the time, establishing it as a leader in the innovation of cinematic techniques.

Screened through the Chicago consular region from May 1-7, the film will be show at 7:30 p.m. on May 3 at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts in Chicago. Admission is free. For details, call 312-822-9545.
