muniDid you ever consider going to an eye doctor to get into shape? That’s the latest trend in fitness, and it’s happening now in Lake Forest.

Joyce Muni began her professional journey as an ophthalmologist, and she has been proudly serving Libertyville and neighboring areas in Lake County for 30 years. She is on staff at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan. With her busy schedule, Dr. Muni sees many patients with a wide variety of ailments.

“I’m a physician and very interested in the total well-being of my patients,” Muni says. “Patients come to me with all kinds of issues besides their eyes, and we discussed them. A lot of them needed to exercise and keep fit. I decided I could offer help in this area.”

Muni obtained certification in sports nutrition, aerobics and personal training from the International Fitness Association, and opened the doors in 2007 to Lake Forest Custom Fitness, a state-of-the-art facility that provides an intimate setting for personal training and consulting.

A fixture at the facility when she’s not practicing ophthalmology, Muni also employs a personal trainer at Lake Forest Custom Fitness, which is located behind her home, and has a separate entrance for clients.

“We look at the whole person,” describes Muni. “We do not have any group classes and everything is tailored to the individual and their needs. We do some couples training with husband and wives, but that’s it. We don’t charge club fees and the workout times are very flexible.”

Sports nutrition, sports-specific training, body building, progressive relaxation and lower back injury rehab are among the many additional offerings at Lake Forest Custom Fitness beyond one-on-one and couples training.

The Lake Forest resident recently earned a master’s degree in public health from Benedictine University and is using that knowledge to run and grow her fitness practice.

A firm believer in the power of education, Muni also holds a master’s in sociology from Western Reserve University in Ohio and a master’s in library and information science from Dominican University in River Forest, and she is currently studying for a degree in occupational safety and health from Columbia Southern University.

Muni’s thirst for education came from her parents. Her father was a builder and her mother held a doctorate in education and was a poet. Muni traces her drive and determination to her Italian grandparents, who came to America from Sicily in the early 1900s. “My grandparents came over to escape being so poor, and my grandfather raised five children while my grandfather built houses,” Muni explains. “I remember them well and they continue to inspire me.”

It was seven years ago when Muni herself decided she needed to become more fit, giving her the initial spark to open Lake Forest Fitness. With her schedule and accomplishments, it’s no small wonder that she would want to build up her strength!
